Down syndrome could be suffered by someone with following physical characteristics: oblique eye fissures with epicanthic skin folds on the inner corner of the eyes, muscle hypotonia (poor muscle tone), a flat nasal bridge, a single palmar fold, a protruding tongue (due to small oral cavity, and an enlarged tongue near the tonsils), a short neck, white spots on the iris known as Brushfield spots, excessive joint laxity including atlanto-axial instability, congenital heart defects, excessive space between large toe and second toe, a single flexion furrow of the fifth finger, and a higher number of ulnar loop dermatoglyphs. Most individuals with Down syndrome have mental retardation in the mild (IQ 50–70) to moderate (IQ 35–50) range, with individuals having Mosaic Down syndrome (explained below) typically 10–30 points higher. In addition, individuals with Down syndrome can have serious abnormalities affecting any body system. They also may have a broad head and a very round face.

Most kids with Down syndrome have mild to moderate mental retardation (IQ 30 to 60). Persons with Down syndrome at the upper end of the IQ range might attain 4th to 6th grade reading skills. Persons with Down syndrome can provide for basic self-help needs, and have varying degrees of educational achievement and social and occupational skills. They need special education, training facilities, and frequently sheltered living and work situations." Source: EncyMaster

There are two really important things YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW for your kid with Down Syndrome. The first is to make sure your kid has enough DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and AA (arachidonic acid) - preferably start the supplement from birth or before. Doing so may preserve or boost your kid’s intelligence by about seven (7) Intelligence Quotient (IQ) points! Breast milk is normally rich in DHA and AA. That’s a pretty good boost that costs next to nothing. The second if your kid has Down Syndrome or any other metabolic disorder, regular blood tests with a focus on iodine, selenium, zinc, iron studies and thyroid function may prove beneficial.

IQ Scores are not the end all
The last thing to remember is that IQ scores are only indicative of a narrow band of intelligence types, namely analytical, mathematical intelligence. IQ says nothing about emotional intelligence, potential for wisdom or depth of soul, and it never will. IQ also says nothing about how happy anyone can be throughout life, it only gives a general indication of how much help they’ll need. With your help, a child with Down’s Syndrome is more than capable of a happy life.
